THE SCHOLAR OF FIRE. THE APPRENTICE, sometimes known as THE CHILD. You have spent most of your life without the company of your kind, except the one who raised you. But I see that two powerful beings have been around you for a long time. They have visited you recently, each seeking your allegiance. You have chosen wisely; Mir is a being of love and life. But I see that both of these beings have been around you for a long time. I doubt the other one, the flashing, angry one, will let you go without a fight. Beware, it is deceptive and clever, and you have much to learn . . . I don’t know what the other thing was, Kyamu. I’ll have to ask Sister Sulon. It was bright but shimmering or shifting, with sparks of color. I’ve never heard of anything like it.
Oh, and there’s one more thing. I saw another presence around you, more recently, and . . . well..you went to the Symposium, right? I had my first kiss on the fairway at the Symposium, with a dashing guy named Tovin. He smelled so good. We courted for six months, and then he broke it off. I thought I would die of heartbreak, but I didn’t. Sometimes things really aren’t meant to be.
— Faron the Seer, Servant of Skura
Kyamu is a mahksi youth who at one point apprenticed to replace Ochi as Draken’s accountant whenever the elderly dwarf retires. Darker blue than many mahksi, coral growths ring Kyamu’s ears and his kelp-like hair is largely unkempt. Kyamu was socially awkward, struggling to fit in with the more charismatic children.
Following the Symposium, Kyamu had a romantic fling with another mahksi and was devastated when she left him. He moved into seclusion near the edge of the city, where the group found him after the murders of Lore and Kada.
